Protecting the Skin
Sun exposure causes skin damage. Photoaging is the premature aging of the skin due to
prolonged and cumulative sun exposure. Photoaging (photodamage) is a preventable
dermatology condition. A mild case is generally characterized by wrinkles, freckles,
lentigines, blemishes and telangiectases. Telangiectases are birthmark-type lesions
caused by dilation of a group or small blood vessels. Moderate photoaging is generally
characterized by tough, rough, thickened, sallow (yellowish) skin and severe photoaging
is usually indicated by actinic keratoses (horny, premalignant skin lesions), reduction
in skin elasticity and scarring. While aged skin is smooth and unblemished with
exaggerated expression lines, photoaged skin has more pronounced wrinkles, lentigines and
pigmented lesions like freckles.
Protect your skin against the sun's damaging UV light
UVB rays:
Shorter wave lengths that cause visible damage to the skin. UVB primarily affects the skin's outer layers and is the primary cause of sunburn. These rays contribute to skin aging and skin cancer and are more intense during the summer months, at higher altitudes and in areas closer to the equator.
UVA rays:
Longer wave lengths that remain constant throughout the seasons. Their effects are cumulative and they penetrate more deeply into the skin. They contribute to photodamage (wrinkling of the skin, premature aging and skin cancer).
Photo-sensitive skin types:
- Due to sun-reactive types (fair and sensitive skin)
- Due to skin conditions like Rosacea, Melasma, Actinic Keratosis
- Due to skin medications like Accutane and Retin-A
- Due to therapies like Alpha-Hydroxy Acid
- Due to treatments like cosmetic procedures, peels and lasers
You need to protect your skin against sun exposure because:
- Facial skin is exposed to UV radiation everyday
- The incidence of skin cancer continues to rise
- Year-round sun exposure for active lifestyles and outdoor occupations
The Canadian Dermatology Association recommends using a sunscreen with broad spectrum protection against UVA and UVB rays everyday. So, moisturize and protect your facial skin with
Cetaphil Daily Facial Moisturizer SPF 15 or SPF 50 because your facial skin is exposed to UV rays everyday!
For total body sun protection use a full spectrum, photostable sunscreen such as Ombrelle SPF 30, 45 or 60.
